Tucked between the Little River and Dry Valley is the Selu Conservancy, a pristine slice of Appalachia where history, culture, land use and education are part of everyday life. The Farm at Selu offers its visitors, often children from area schools, a unique look at a bygone era.
In addition to offering a great visitor experience, the Farm at Selu is a great learning site for Radford University students, who are encouraged to volunteer, intern or work on class projects in coordination with the farmhouse. Learning to give guided tours, working in the gardens, archiving and assisting in programs on-site are all hands-on opportunities offered at the farmhouse. The Farm at Selu also serves as a laboratory for other disciplines. The Department of Biology has an apiary nearby, along with many other wildlife and vegetation learning areas. The Department of Anthropological Sciences uses the land around the farmhouse to learn more about the past through archeological investigations and studies.
The land around the farmhouse is also full of possibility. A medical herb guide for native plants has been developed, along with several tinctures of products. In the future, the medicinal uses of native plants will be discussed on tours. In addition, expanded walking trails would offer opportunities to further explore the area’s history, geology and wildlife.
TOGETHER we can protect and preserve this valuable and history-rich land and continue to open the doors for visitors of all ages to come, learn and explore. Your gift to the Farm at Selu will help extend programmatic resources, maintain facilities and projects and develop space for new opportunities.
If the Farm at Selu is the first to receive $1,910 in contributions during the Highlander10 Challenge, the Radford University Foundation provide us with an additional $1,000 of funding. So please consider making your gift today. Competition ends on December 1.
